How to choose accounting software for Quebec SMBs in 2026
Where your data lives, GST/QST, the real 3-year cost worked out line by line, French support: QuickBooks, Sage 50, Acomba and Forge Tech put through the same test, prices collected on August 7, 2026.
By Guillaume Régimbald, Founder of Forge Tech Inc.
You own or manage an SMB in Quebec and you're shopping for new accounting software. Sage 50 keeps your data on your own computer. Acomba is more than 35 years old. QuickBooks belongs to Intuit, an American company. How do you decide? Here are the 7 criteria that actually matter in 2026 — each with the question to ask or the math to redo yourself.
Updated September 25, 2026. Competitor prices quoted here were collected on August 7, 2026; they change often, so check them before you sign.
1. Where is your data stored?
This is the number one criterion now that Quebec's Law 25 fully applies (last phase: September 22, 2024). Since September 22, 2023, before communicating personal information outside Quebec, a business must first conduct a privacy impact assessment (PIA), according to the Commission d'accès à l'information. Your accounting data — customers, vendors, payroll, bank transactions — is exactly that kind of information.
There's also the CLOUD Act, a 2018 US law: with a warrant, US authorities can require an American provider to hand over data it controls, even when stored outside the United States, and without you necessarily being notified. For a Quebec SMB managing health data (clinic), Social Insurance Numbers (payroll), or sensitive commercial contracts, this is a legal and ethical risk.
Two questions to ask the vendor: "Are your servers physically in Canada?" If the answer is "our main datacenter is in the US but we have a replica zone in Canada", that's not the same thing. Then: "Is your parent company American?" If so, the CLOUD Act follows it, wherever the servers are.
My two answers, so you can compare. Your accounting data is stored on my server, in Quebec. And Forge Tech has no parent company, American or otherwise: it's me.
Two clarifications. Traffic between the software and my server goes through Cloudflare, an American company that filters attacks before they reach me: your data passes through without being cached there. And some AI features rely on a provider based in the United States. If you'd rather that content not leave Quebec (often the case for a law firm or a clinic), I switch off the Forgeron assistant, PDF invoice reading and email triage for your business. And if the software can't confirm that setting, it refuses to send. One exception for now: body-shop photo analysis does not follow that switch yet.
2. Native Quebec tax compliance
Good Quebec accounting software must natively handle:
- GST 5% + QST 9.975% (with pre-configured codes)
- HST in the provinces that apply it (13% to 15% depending on the province)
- Input tax credits and input tax refunds (ITC/ITR)
- Calculation of the GST/QST return filed with Revenu Québec (form FPZ-500-V)
- For payroll: QPP, EI, QPIP, HSF, CNESST, Quebec and federal income tax, T4 and RL-1 slips with their summaries
If the software requires manual configuration for Quebec taxes, it's poorly adapted to Quebec. Move on.
In Forge Tech, the GST 5% and QST 9.975% codes are created when your account opens. From the Starter plan, the GST/QST filings module calculates, for the month or quarter you pick, GST collected, ITCs, QST collected, ITRs and the net amount to remit. Once the return is filed, it keeps the Revenu Québec confirmation number you enter.
3. The real 3-year cost
Pricing pages show one month. Your budget lives over several years, and launch discounts always end. What matters is TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) over 3 years. Here's the math, assumptions on the table.
Example: an SMB with 5 employees on payroll, 4 people using the software, monthly billing, taxes extra, public prices collected on August 7, 2026. For each program, I take the cheapest plan that covers those 4 people and payroll.
| Software (plan) | Monthly math | Per year | 3-yr TOTAL |
|---|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks Online Plus + Payroll Core | $85 to $110 + $25 + 5 × $5 = $135 to $160 | $1,620 to $1,920 | $4,860 to $5,760 |
| Sage 50 Premium + Payroll | Annual licence | from $1,955 | from $5,865 |
| Forge Tech Pro (payroll included, estimated pay stubs for now) | $99 | $1,188 | $3,564 |
| Forge Tech Pro, paid yearly | $99 × 10 months (2 months free) | $990 | $2,970 |
Sources: QuickBooks, from Canadian comparison sites updated in July 2026 (Payroll Core: $25 a month plus $5 per employee); Sage 50, from Canadian price lists published in 2026; Forge Tech, my official price list. QuickBooks often offers 50% off the first months: I didn't count it, because it doesn't cover all 36 months.
Redo the math with your own numbers: monthly price of the plan you need + payroll (base price + employees × price per employee), all × 36. Only 3 of you in the software? Then QuickBooks Essentials ($45 to $65) is enough: with the same payroll, $3,420 to $4,140 over 3 years. Forge Tech Pro paid yearly stays below ($2,970); paid monthly ($3,564), it depends on the exact Essentials price. Then ask the vendor the question that matters: "What will my price be in month 13?" According to my competitive analysis of August 9, 2026, QuickBooks raised Essentials by 13% and Plus by 22% on August 1, 2026.
Forge Tech includes Quebec payroll in the Pro and Enterprise plans: no module to add. And my listed price isn't a launch discount: it's the regular price.
4. Real French technical support
You have a payroll bug on Wednesday night before the GST remittance. How long before a human who speaks your language answers?
- Forge Tech: email reply within 24 business hours on the Base and Starter plans, in under 4 hours on the Pro plan, and within a response time agreed in writing on the Enterprise plan. I'm the one who answers, Guillaume, from Quebec City.
- QuickBooks, Sage, Acomba: ask for their response time in writing, plan by plan, and the language of first contact.
Then check. During each candidate's free trial, send support the same question — for example "How do I correct a payroll that's already been paid?" — on a Wednesday around 7 p.m. Note when the answer arrives, the language, and whether it actually solves your problem. This small test is worth more than any comparison table, mine included.
5. Quebec industry modules
Is your business in a regulated Quebec sector? Check for:
- Construction: CCQ (Commission de la construction du Québec) contributions by trade and by sector — residential, institutional-commercial, industrial, civil engineering and roadwork — with monthly remittance, and the T5018 slip for payments to subcontractors
- Rental real estate: leases, rents and an annual summary for form T776
- Restaurant: tips by server, and a sales recording system (SRS) certified by Revenu Québec, connected to WEB-SRM since physical SRMs were retired in 2025
At Forge Tech, the CCQ module is included from the Pro plan. You enter your trades with their sector, hourly rate and contribution rate. Each time you log hours, the software calculates gross pay (overtime at time and a half) and the contribution. At month-end, the "Rapport de remise mensuelle" (monthly remittance report) tab groups everything by trade and by employee: hours, gross pay, contribution. The T5018 slip is still prepared with your accountant: in January, the software can email them the total paid to your vendors the previous year.
Rental real estate (properties, leases, rents, late payments, annual summary for form T776) and restaurant (floor plan, table orders, bill with tip, sales by server and by hour) are part of the Enterprise plan. One limit to know about: my Restaurant module is not a certified SRS. For mandatory billing, you still need one.
According to my checks of August 7 and 9, 2026, neither QuickBooks Online nor Sage 50 offers a CCQ module. Acomba does: it's Acomba Construction, with its CCQ payroll.
6. Migration and export — your data ownership
You'll switch accounting software in 3 years. How easy to retrieve your data?
- Ask: "Can I export all my bookkeeping in CSV/Excel anytime, at no cost?"
- Ask: "Can I bulk-export my attachments (receipts, vendor bills)?"
- Ask: "On cancellation, how long before you delete my data?"
The terms of use contain these answers. A serious vendor makes them easy to find. If you have to search, bad sign.
Mine are in section 6.2 of my terms of use: CSV, Excel or PDF export anytime with the built-in tools, and 90 days after termination to retrieve everything before permanent deletion.
7. Is the founder accessible?
An underrated but critical criterion for SMBs. Can you talk to the founder if you have a major problem?
- QuickBooks / Sage: no. Intuit (United States) and Sage Group (United Kingdom) are publicly traded companies.
- Acomba: no. It belongs to ACCEO Solutions, part of the Harris group.
- Forge Tech: yes. I designed the software, my number, 418-431-3319, is at the bottom of the site, and I answer emails myself.
For an SMB starting up, that changes everything: you don't fight a ticket system to get a critical bug fixed, you talk to the person who decides on the fix. The flip side, I'd rather tell you myself: Forge Tech is one person. That's exactly why your data can be exported anytime (criterion 6): you should never be captive to a vendor, me included.
Quick comparison of the 4 options
Prices collected on August 7, 2026, same assumptions as in criterion 3.
| Criterion | QuickBooks | Sage 50 | Acomba | Forge Tech |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who holds your data | Intuit, an American company (online) | You, on your workstation | You, on your workstation; ACCEO with Acomba GO | ✅ Forge Tech, on my server in Quebec (details: criterion 1) |
| Users in the plan compared | 5 (Plus) | Billed per user (Premium) | 1 (GO Croissance, $99/month), $12 per extra user | ✅ 10 (Pro) |
| QC payroll included | ❌ Add-on | ⚠️ "+ Payroll" plan | ⚠️ Extra fees: $200 activation, then per pay run | ⚠️ From Pro, estimated pay stubs for now (exact calculation not on screen yet) |
| CCQ Construction | ❌ No | ❌ No | ✅ Acomba Construction | ✅ From Pro |
| 3-year cost (criterion 3 example) | $4,860 to $5,760 | from $5,865 | GO Croissance (1 user) + 3 users at $12: $135 × 36 = $4,860, plus payroll fees | $3,564 ($2,970 paid yearly) |
| Who answers you | Intuit customer service | Sage customer service and resellers | ACCEO and 1,200 partner firms | The person who designed the software |
| Type of software | Online (browser) | Desktop software | Desktop, or online with Acomba GO | Installed software, data on a server in Quebec |
My honest recommendation
Forge Tech deserves your 30-day trial if at least one of these fits you:
- you have employees in Quebec and you pay extra for payroll elsewhere;
- you're in construction and still calculate your CCQ contributions by hand;
- more than 5 of you work in the books (QuickBooks Plus stops at 5 users, my Pro plan allows 10);
- you want your data on a server in Quebec and a founder you can call.
If you're a Canadian franchise of a US chain with strict corporate requirements, QuickBooks remains a de facto standard for US system integration.
If you're self-employed, with no employees and few invoices, Wave may be enough: its Starter plan is free. Two caveats, collected on August 7, 2026: bank import is reserved for Wave Pro ($25 a month), and Wave's payroll doesn't cover Quebec. My Base plan, at $29 a month, targets the same profile, with bank reconciliation and sales taxes included.
And in every case, talk to your accountant before switching: they're often the one who'll do your year-ends in the software you pick.
Next step
Three concrete actions for next week:
- Try one or two candidate programs. Forge Tech offers a 30-day trial, no credit card: start here
- Import your last 3 months of bank transactions in CSV to test matching. In Forge Tech, each deposit brings up the open customer invoices for the same amount, within $1, or issued in the previous 30 days; each withdrawal, the vendor bills. You confirm, and the payment is posted to the invoice. My import expects a single amount column, with a decimal point: positive for deposits, negative for withdrawals. If your statement splits withdrawals and deposits into two columns, or writes amounts with a decimal comma (12,50), send it to me before importing: I'll check with you that it reads correctly.
- Ask each vendor the 7 questions above. Take notes. The right choice will be obvious.
